today: 6 am screaming monitor alarm. banana bread on the porch watching rain with jasper all wrapped in a wool poncho. nick jr. horoscope telling me i like chasing phantoms. 2 hour nap. giant iced coffee. extreme hair cut. hunt for an unknown named succulent. no success. impulsive volumizing shampoo purchase. dockside hammock swing. transported and awed by arcade fires new interactive video. 

curiosities

Cabinets of natural curiosities date back to 1500. They began in the courts of Italian princes. Essentially, they were collections, displayed in cabinets, of interesting specimens found in nature- insects, plants, bones, seashells, even monstrosities like multi-headed creatures. I just got done browsing the travels and discoveries of Joanna Ebenstein on her flickr and she has some amazing photos (seen above) of the lovely displays in the Biblioteque Centrale du Museum National d'Histiore Naturelle in Paris. I'm debating using my entire savings to buy a plane ticket right NOW! Dilema is- there are even more really great photos of other creepy, cool museums she's been in and I don't know where to start. I do know, my collection of specimens will be snatched from around the house and united in a rustic wooden cabinet very soon. Wish I could have bought that illegal, ferociously clawed turkey foot at the flea market today. Check our ETSY store soon to get your hands on one of the many antique crates (some with dividers) I picked up today that will be perfect for your very own cabinet of curiosities! 

good habits

I fell in love with tobacco pipes at a very young age. Yes, it's true. The scent I could catch while walking past old men smoking pipes on a bench at Sequoyah Marina in the summer will never fade from memory. It puts me back there every time I catch a whiff. I even tried to pick up the habit once just to get that deja vu. I knock no one for indulging in this fine gentlemanly cheeching method. In fact, I'm afraid the pipe is fading and encourage more dapper young males to pick up the habit...partly for my benefit. Check out very talented, 19 year old photographer (second photo above), Simon Filip's biography pic to see what I'm talking about. He's hitting it spot on (third photo). I think I should just befriend some elderly scotch drinking men.  

With this, I have for you a collection of three, great vintage pipes. One stitched leather, one with a metal stem and screw off filter, and one sport stub with carvings. To indulge with or just to view.

Newest item. John Lutes, American maritime artist, fishing boat print. Liking the rippled reflection. And that it is huge, guessing 3'x 2 1/2', and in a great thick dark wood frame. embracing taxidermy

I'm heading to my Dad's to swipe one of his mounted white tail deer heads right NOW! I have gone from  being indecisive about the unusual practice of preserving and displaying dead animals to wanting them everywhere. Like these rad sisters, Hollister and Porter Hovey. I could possibly enjoy lounging in one of these decked out taxidermy chairs by French designer Michel Haillard...possibly. Sadly, the only thing I was not allowed to buy in Jerry's Used Furniture store today was a beautiful set of antelope horns. Tease. But, lucky me- I'm going to an estate sale tomorrow with "taxidermy items" for sale. Fingers crossed. Also, seen above is Chuffy the mouse driving his guinea pig time machine. This taxidermy curiosity and must-have table topper is available for £594.99 at Top Hat Taxidermy. Forget it! I'm just going to make my own real squirrel lamp!

inspiration

I have never seen walls that make stuffed grouse and antlers look so appealing. I think I want to be the woman, Michele Masters, that owns this amazingly eclectic, rustic SoHo loft. Though I can be sometimes torn between clean, fresh, white and minimalist (Jacob's preference), I cannot deny that I like "things" and this lady has some "things". And I also cannot agree with her more when she says, "Only buy things that you LOVE and then figure out how to work them into your space. That way you're always surrounded by things that make you happy and your home will be a reflection of you and not look like anyone else's." Which leads to my current dilemma- Wanting to keep all the things I love and not sell them like I set out to do. How will I ever decide what I absolutely MUST hold on to? 

taking inventory of my life

Putting it all in one pile makes it looks like so much more. Feels good. There's everything from a duck pillow to a viewfinder with slides of patriotic monkeys riding a german shepard. Can't wait to have it posted and for sale for you!!
